- General learning difficulties: Complicate or delay the development of basic speech abilities.
- Physical special needs: Interfere with the child's abbility to explore the world around them. Some special needs, for example a cleft palate or cerebral palsy, can influence development of speech.
- Sensorial special needs: Deafness and blindness, for example, interfere with early development of speech and cognitive abilities.
- Emotional deprivation: Can weaken communication between the child and parents. This communication is important for development of social abilities and speech. Also, emotional deprivation can affect a child's sense of security which is necessary for the confidence to explore the world around them.
- Lack of stimulation: Adults should stimulate young children by showing them different things and playing and talking with them.
- Weak immune sytem: Frequent illneses and hospitalizations interfere with the development of the child.
